Have you heard of conventional advice like:
"Don't job hop or you'll have problems getting hired!"
Give me a break.
In today’s newsletter, I will share why job-hopping is an underrated skill.
I will also share how to job-hop correctly and ensure you get the job of your dreams.
Whenever I hear people who advise against job-hopping, it usually stems from:
The fear of taking risks
Not wanting change
Being too comfortable
They cover up this fear with sayings like: “Employers won’t take someone who job hop.”
This is false.
According to a study by LinkedIn, Gen Z & Millennials are the generation of job-hoppers, with 70% considering a job change within the next 12 months.
With this data, employers are open to the idea of someone not staying in a company for decades.
Now let’s talk about the benefits.
Workers who job hop tend to have:
Higher pay
More flexibility
Passion for their work
I’ve never met a job-hopper who regretted their decision.
For example, my Premium client Azura, had less than 2 years of experience in each of her many jobs.
If we follow conventional sayings, she shouldn’t be hired.
Yet, she joined a hospital without experience in healthcare, by using 3 steps:
1) She took up a training in healthcare
Instead of complaining about what she didn’t like, she took up healthcare training to prepare for her next career move.
Sometimes taking the first step is all you need to kickstart your career change.
And no one said it would be easy…
2) She conveyed her expertise well
By drafting a one-page résumé, she clearly articulated her prior experiences in service, which were transferrable to the job of a patient service associate.
Oftentimes employers aren’t responding isn’t because of a candidate’s job hop, but it’s because the résumé wasn’t drafted well.
Here’s what I drafted for Azura:
3) She gave herself a chance to explore
It seems insignificant, but this step is the most important of all.
No willingness to explore = No change
It was a sacrifice and struggle, and this paid off for a career she loved.
Are you making the move today?
Have you been procrastinating on a job or career change you’ve always wanted?
Maybe it’s time to put the fear aside (of course, make a calculated risk).
If you’re intending to make the hop, here’s the 3 steps you can take:
Take up the necessary training to build skills
Draft a good one-page résumé
Have the willingness and drive to explore
I wish you the best in your job hop.
