Have you heard of the trendy saying on social media?
“Stay in your 9-5 job and hustle on your passion from 7-2”
To me, that’s nonsense.
In today’s issue, I will share why this wisdom is overrated and the alternative pathways to achieving your passion without burning out.
These types of posts usually circulate on social media, especially by people who call themselves “entrepreneurs” or “hustlers”:
(Sorry Gary Vee, I still love your content)
Here’s the life most of you have:
When you reach home after 5 pm (or after 9 pm for those in OT culture), you're so exhausted.
All you want to do is take a shower, have your dinner, and rest your mind as the next day arrives.
The weekends are then used to recharge for the next week (or to spend time with your loved ones).
How are you going to work on anything else?
So perhaps the solution would be this: Work on what you love
Before you accuse me of giving "feel good" advice, let me explain it using 2 alternative pathways:
1) Working on what you love does not have to be a side hustle.
It can mean working a job where your strengths and passions are utilised.
You might have to make a career switch, but the gist of it is that engaging in work that aligns with your passions is more than just starting a side hustle.
It extends to employment opportunities where your abilities and interests overlap.
(By the way, I teach how you can get a job that’s aligned with your passions in The Job Hunting Toolbox, at 50% OFF)
2) You can go all-in on business, by saving up 6 months' worth of cash.
If entrepreneurship is your thing and you need the concentration to build it, go all in.
I know it sounds crazy or risky (which is why starting a side hustle is attractive), yet if you have already:
Done market research
Validated your idea through an MVP (Minimum Viable Product)
You have 6 months of spare cash to fall back on
Then it isn’t too crazy anymore.
Conclusion
With either of these pathways, you'll end up with a job you love (where the hours don't matter so much anymore) or a business that can sustain you.
If the business fails, well, you lose 6 months of savings and you can save it back through a job.
I hope this newsletter reminds everyone (and social media pages) not to blindly repost advice without taking things into context.
And for all of us, let's start taking a step towards a more interesting life.
See you next week.
